I am a 23-year-old Belgian-Irish student who has just started a 4 year PhD at Imperial College London in the research area "The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Infection” with a focus on viruses.

I grew up a little all over the world having been born in South Africa and having lived in Swaziland, Poland, Bosnia, Belgium, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Timor Leste, and Singapore where I completed my International Baccalaureate at the United World College. After completing my IB in 2014, I moved to Oxford to attend a 4 year-integrated Master’s course in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford. After graduating from Oxford in the summer of 2018, I moved to Munich Germany for a virology internship at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In February 2019 I began tutoring full time before the start of my PhD in October 2019.

I am an extremely active person and enjoy a variety of sports. I used to sail competitively internationally in the Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial Classes, and still sail during the holidays. Since being at university my love for rugby has also grown. However given my susceptibility to injury and clumsiness, I now only stick to Touch Rugby. I also boulder/rock climb as often as I can.

A computer science and applied mathematics engineer (PhD in applied mathematics), I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in mathematics. I have also completed teacher training (agrégation) and taught mathematics at Collège Saint-Pierre (Uccle) as well as in two European Schools, in French.

My name is Arjen. I tutor and give exam training in math and physics for upper secondary education (Dutch HAVO/VWO, IB, or other similar programmes). As an Aerospace Engineer, I help students not only with solving problems, but especially with understanding the “why” behind the theory.

I start with a short diagnosis: where is the real difficulty? Based on this, I create a personal learning plan that I share with the student. In this way we work in a focused way on those areas where most is to be gained. During the sessions, the focus is on recognizing structure and analyzing problems step by step, so that students become more independent and their confidence gets a boost.

In 2027 studeer ik af voor mijn universitaire Master Applied Physics, maar gedurende mijn opleiding heb ik gevonden waar écht mijn passie ligt. Ik ben begonnen met lesgeven en inmiddels heb ik mijn eerstegraadsbevoegdheid voor natuurkunde al op zak. Om mijn hobby niet te hoeven missen, blijf ik bijles geven tot ik na mijn studie echt een voltijd baan als natuurkundedocent heb.

Ik heb al 5+ jaren ervaring in het bijlesgeven. Ook wiskunde ligt me erg goed, en ik heb al regelmatig wiskunde bijles gegeven. Ik ben dus inzetbaar voor zowel natuurkunde als wiskunde. Mijn grootste vaardigheid als 1-op-1 docent is dat ik heel erg geduldig ben, en de leerling alle tijd bied die hij/zij nodig heeft.

Zoals gezegd ben ik ook daadwerkelijk docent en ben ik het gewend om voor volle klaslokalen te staan. Dat maakt mij didactisch sterk, en stelt mij in staat om snel te herkennen wat voor soort leerling ik voor me heb. Heeft uw kind moeite met rekenen? Loopt het vast bij verhaalsommen, breuken of procenten? Of begrijpt uw kind de uitleg op school, maar lukt het niet om deze zelfstandig toe te passen?

Veel leerlingen kunnen een losse rekensom oplossen, maar vinden het lastig om een verhaal of grafiek om te zetten naar de juiste berekening. Juist daar besteed ik tijdens mijn lessen veel aandacht aan.

Daarom begeleid ik leerlingen stap voor stap bij het oplossen van rekenproblemen. Mijn doel is niet om een leerling voor te doen hoe een som moet worden opgelost, maar om de leerling te leren hoe hij of zij zélf tot de oplossing kan komen.

Tijdens de lessen stel ik vragen zoals:

Wat wordt er eigenlijk gevraagd?
Welke informatie kennen we al?
Welke gegevens zijn belangrijk?
Hoe zou jij deze som aanpakken?
Waarom kies je juist deze berekening?

Op deze manier leren leerlingen zelfstandig nadenken over een som, in plaats van steeds afhankelijk te zijn van een vaste methode.

Ik besteed veel aandacht aan het ontwikkelen van inzicht. Zodra een leerling begrijpt waarom een bepaalde aanpak werkt, worden ook moeilijkere opgaven beter beheersbaar.

Iedere les wordt aangepast aan het niveau van de leerling. Samen werken we niet alleen aan betere resultaten, maar ook aan meer zelfvertrouwen tijdens het rekenen.
