In the first lesson, I will ask you about yourself, your reason for taking English/Spanish lessons, and what you want to improve in. I will then introduce myself and explain my typical class structure. We will next spend 10 minutes on what I call a "warm-up", which involves presenting an image with an interesting story behind it and asking you to describe it and guess what's going on in the photo. I find this exercise especially useful for the first lesson because I consider it a more accurate way of assessing a student's strengths and weaknesses than standard small talk. After this, I choose a pre-prepared lesson suited to your level, goals, and interests, which is usually built around a short article excerpt and discussion questions. Throughout the class, I correct mistakes as much as possible without over-correcting, and suggest more advanced vocabulary and grammatical structures where possible. In the last 5 minutes, we will talk about your preferences and plan for future classes, and if you're open to it, I send homework. This is usually an article or video to reflect on and discuss in the next class, or a grammar topic to review with a few exercises, preparing you for a deeper reflection in the next class.

Growing up dyslexic, I was told by teachers I would have a harder time learning additional languages. When I lived abroad for the first time at 16, I discovered I was able to pick up the language easily, which drove me to learn more on my own. I found a system that helped me learn languages quickly, which led me to my passion for language learning, teaching, and linguistics.
Once I began teaching, I found my curriculum also worked well with my students, showing big improvements in short periods of time. This made me want to formalize my teaching and learn about the science behind language learning by pursuing a linguistics degree at the University of Amsterdam. Throughout my studies I gained current knowledge on language acquisition sciences, which I have built in my lessons.
Additionally, my thesis research on how dyslexia affects foreign language learning gave me insights into dyslexic learners and helped me answer my longstanding question: how had I learned 7 languages despite my dyslexia supposedly holding me back? All of this has increased my drive as a teacher to help language learners succeed, regardless of the challenges they think hold them back.
